Tokio Out of Place presents “Parallaxe in Nagara”, an omnibus of 10 short films. For this project, Kolkoz produced onsite videos involving the locals of the Nara Prefecture town Nagara Gose as part of the Nara Machiya art festival Hanarart 2013. Using two professional-grade cameras, the series films the left and right sides of their subjects from anatomical perspectives, bringing awareness to the way in which the brain compiles slightly different images. In doing so, it opens up new possibilities for understanding and expressing what we see given our diverse backgrounds. Against the backdrop of Gose’s beautiful pastoral scenery, local residents and volunteers appear on camera nonsensically repeating “kimono”, “haiku”, “karaoke”, “bonsai”, and “kawaii”, and other words and images describing foreigners’ stereotypes of Japan. Incorporating humor and irony, these eccentric films draw attention to matters of “left and right” and “east and west”, expressing something particularly true of Japan today.
