“Island View - Why Artists Focus on Islands - ”

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Finished
Tokyo Wonder Site has been continually discovering, nurturing and supporting young artists through programs such as the “Tokyo Wonder Wall”, the “TWS-Emerging” exhibition, as well as various residency programs since 2001, fostering for over 10 years a wide range of young creatives who have come to work on the international stage. One particular theme which has been repeatedly observed amongst such artists over this time is the motif of the island, with artists painting the islands they were born on; artists working on islands; artists addressing the modalities of islands in our time… each encapsulating a particular value and perspective through this image. In this exhibition, works incorporating those precious “islands” and their respective views, mix and reverberate, coming to form a single island landscape.
