Winter Collection - Painting the Sun, Moon and Stars

Hiratsuka Museum of Art
Finished
Since the beginning of human existence mankind has lived together with the sun, moon and stars, these heavenly bodies providing light and dictating the seasons and climate, being indivisible from human life. Even now in Japanese custom many rituals and celebrations commemorate this special relationship from the customs of Moon Viewing to the Tanabata festivities. It is not only in daily life but also in art where we may witness the importance of these orbs of light, with 8th century gold and silver leaf inscriptions of the sun and moon to be found at the Takamatsuzuka Tomb opening the way for a whole history of such depictions. This exhibition makes a special selection of such works from the museum collection including the night skies and setting suns of Akira Itoh, Koujin Kudo and Komei Kondo, the praise of the sun’s radiance to be found in the work of Tadashi Suguro and Setsuko Migishi and the Greek myth of Icarus depicted by Naoki Yamamoto, revealing resonant themes of life and death.
