Takao Oya
Pieces of cut white paper unite people and the gods. In the Tohoku region, the beauty of cut Japanese paper has been passed down by Shinto priests for generations. In the New Year, paper cutting transforms the old into the new, and the old is burned so that nothing is left behind. While the Great East Japan Earthquake had a significant impact on this important traditional culture, Takao Oya’s photography captures the unblemished beauty that lives on in the paper cuttings of Tohoku’s people.
