The Art History of Bishojo - Beautiful Girls

Aomori Museum of Art
Finished
The motif of the beautiful girl appears through art, manga, animation, film, literature and the performing arts as a particular feature of contemporary Japanese culture. The concept / image of the “girl” was born in the modern era with the establishment of the schooling system and the recognition of female students, along with the flourishing popularity of girls’ magazines at the beginning of the 20th century. But even before such times young girls featured frequently in works of art, here traced through the genres of the Edo era’s Bijinga and evolved to the “Beautiful Girl” image through a variety of everyday media, offering reflections upon what such an image has come to encapsulate for the population of Japan. From the “flowers” of Edo, to modern bijinga, to lyrical illustrations of young girls to the post-war explosion of manga, anime and characters, to the diverse interpretations of the girl found in contemporary art today, 300 works from 110 artists seek out the very meaning of “girl”.
