Isamu Sakamoto’s “Now, I am headed for Tianzhu!!” has been selected for the 27th Hitotsubo exhibition. Sakamoto’s approach to photography is driven by his own deep-seated impulses, which compel him to push the shutter button. “Tianzhu!!” is an account of his travels in search of a fabled Buddhist priest versed in the three branches of sutras. He encountered and photographed a variety of places and events during this journey, but the series is more than just a pursuit of stimulating visual experience. It captures an “impulse” toward what had previously gone unseen in the expressions of close friends and the scenery of familiar places. Sakamoto weaves a narrative about the joy to be found in the connections and feelings between people. “Everyone is using different ways of finding their own utopias”, he explains. These photographs offer a glimpse into the utopia Sakamoto has set off for.
