Mud and Jelly

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Finished
Paint is a strange substance. At once gooey, soft, and sticky, it is used to create images of people and landscapes on the canvas. When the paint’s gooiness captures the eye, it detracts from our awareness of the image it produces. Conversely, when the image stands out, we lose sight of the paint’s oozing property. Therefore, we usually think of a painting as something made so that the material’s gooiness is not overly noticeable. What kinds of works might be created if the gooiness of paint was focused on to the extreme? Exploring this question are some 30 paintings, including the Important Cultural Property “Road Cut Through a Hill” by Ryusei Kishida.
