Lecture “Thinking About the Blazed Trails of Civilization— Talking About Art with Fram Kitagawa”
This event has ended.
The 10th session in this series of talks by East Asia Art Village and Art Platform director Fram Kitagawa and special guests at the tops of their fields welcomes Shigeya Mori, dubbed “the dancing folklorist.” Mori, a long-time observer of the deeply layered cultures of Japan’s northern Tohoku region, has produced both theses and dances. In 2013, as director of the Matsudai Kyodo Shiryokan Folk Museum, he began field research on folklore telling of the cultural climate and lifestyles of the Echigo-Tsumari area. This place on the border of Niigata and Nagano Prefecture harbors cultural and spiritual histories tied to Asia’s mainland and eastern islands via the Japan Sea. Kitagawa and Mori will discuss the unique cultural and spiritual essences at the heart of representations of northern Japan’s Snow Belt and rice-producing Central Mountain regions. (In Japanese).
