In the first solo exhibition of Kunie Sugiura at Taka Ishii Gallery a selection of his photographs from the 1970s are accompanied by photo collage works under a title inspired by the 1982 song from Willie Nelson. Here Sugiura combines the properties of the figurative and the abstract, the improvised and the constructed as he pursues art as an attempt to share the phenomenon of time, light and transient nature. As he explores the relation of photography with painting and drawing he continues to push the subject of the photograph and its abstraction to a further point in a body of work which reveals a unique vision founded upon Japanese art and culture.
