Mikito Ozeki
Following the group show “Tokyo Street” and a solo exhibition at Ikkan Art International in Singapore, Mikito Ozeki’s international reputation has continued to grow. Often focus goes to Ozeki’s technique of paper cutting. He himself has a much more objective stance towards this, however, and his works consistently pursue new possibilities. Like a computer hardware that can produce numerous images with a basic programming based on zeros and ones, Ozeki considers himself to be a machine that outputs his “afterimage,” which he updates himself each day. In contrast to automatism, Ozeki’s cutting procedures depend on a much more physical aspect and the movement of his entire body, the result of everyday discipline. Ozeki’s newest works reminds us once more that paper cutting is a three-dimensional expression. Making new attempts to change impressions based on the positions from which his works are viewed, Ozeki presents significantly different approaches to layering and depth compared to those of paintings. With his cutting knife and paper, Ozeki confronts fundamental questions of artistic expression.
