Jacques Callot
Born in the Duchy of Lorraine, Jacques Callot (1592–1635) was a printmaker of exceptional talent, working for the aristocratic families of France and Italy, while also receiving commissions from religious clerics and rulers of surrounding lands and leaving more than 1,400 works produced over his short life of 40 years. His prints depict the celebrations of religious festivities, local actors and street performers, contrasted with the dark shadow of war, creating a unique pictorial realm, turning his acute vision on reality that intersected with a rich and vivid imagination. Callot is also recognized as having attained new ground in copperplate etching techniques, after years of experiments of trial and error. The prints born from these new techniques at times contrast darkness with vivid brightness, and at other times present a lovely, richly lyrical and gentle linear expression, the surprising depths of which are revealed in this exhibition.
