Artists

Ayao Shiokawa
Ayao Shiokawa incorporates copying techniques in woodblock printmaking. Featuring the contours of people’s bodies and faces cut out with a saw, these prints stand stand on their own as objects d’art. However, Shiokawa goes farther by applying or brush-drawing watercolor paints on top of these prints, then transcribing them onto Japanese paper with a press. Using both the fronts and backs of the paper, these images can be viewed when flipped or turned multiple times. Arrays of forms appear and fade each time Shiokawa creates a work. She sometimes cuts outs and pastes these copied images or adds colored pencil or watercolor paint to them, creating a body of work that she says is not to be seen with the eye but experienced as if through the touch of the hand.
