Chu Enoki
Chu Enoki’s works give no hint that he turned 70 this year. Dealing with themes of weaponry for the past 40 years, this creator of powerful art presents his first Tokyo show, which also marks Yamamoto Gendai’s 10th anniversary. On display is Enoki’s largest works to date, along with early pieces referencing his origins as an artist.

Until now Enoki has held exhibitions in his hometown of Kobe and the larger the Kansai region, feeling no need to take his work elsewhere. This regional focus is only natural given that he continues to treat his art as an extension of his life. However, a sense of crisis concerning recent political developments including revisions to the Three Principles on Arms Exports and Cabinet approval of the state secrecy bill and the collective defense resolution compelled Enoki to act. As an artist whose works have featured guns and artillery as motifs for many years, he felt something akin to a sense of duty he could not ignore. In this unveiling of his largest, most terrible weapon to date, he questions Tokyo, the government, and society at large.
