The Agency for Cultural Affairs has run the Overseas Study Program for Artists (Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists) since FY 1967. The government sends young artists overseas and provides a training course on each of their specialisms, supporting artists who will play a key role in the future art world of Japan, with the number of trainees in fine art coming to exceed 1,000. This series of exhibitions introduces the achievements of the program, with artists working across painting, carving, photography, installation, animation, handicraft and architecture, are selected to represent the current age of Japanese art. Under the theme of “Density and Purity of Japanese Contemporary Art” this 17th Exhibition focuses on 12 emerging artists who create highly delicate and concentrated works modeling and increase the purity of expression by such works. Three trainees in the Conservation and Restoration category will also make presentations for the first time.
