Tojiro Oshita(1870-1911) was a pioneer of watercolor painting in Japan and his first landscapes of discovery were those of Boso. In 1893 while on a journey through Kazusa region he was gripped by the rich beauty of its nature which became a decisive step in his career towards an artist. Following this he came to pursue in earnest an art of water, publishing Japan’s first watercolor instruction book and the magazine ” Mizue, calling forth a boom in watercolor painting. Through his work to disseminate watercolor painting he contributed to a transformation in the traditional Japanese perspective of the landscape and drew many new followers to the world of painting. This exhibition draws on the renowned collection of Iwami Art Museum in a reappreciation of Tojiro Oshita’s work and legacy.
