Beat Streuli
The Brussels-based photographer Beat Streuli has worked in New York and Europe since the late 1980s as a photographer who takes pictures of people in public urban spaces with a telephoto lens, focusing on the everyday qualities of their lives. In recent years his work has become increasingly complex— at once visual and abstract, it has expanded to non-major European cities and places outside of Europe, which the artist examines from a societal perspective. Streuli’s work has been featured at exhibitions including New Photography at MoMa in New York, the Sydney Biennale, the grand opening of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the 2005 Yokohama Triennale, and a 2012 solo show at England’s Ikon Gallery. “Living Room,” his first exhibit in Japan in nearly ten years, presents large-format photographs that shake up our visual experience and bring a new understanding of urban environments by interfacing between ordinary art spaces and the non-art world.
