This event has ended.

Toshiyuki Konishi depicts images of family or other presences close to hand. His particular style requires the abstraction of features to their symbols, with a thick brush boldly scraping out body and light. And while describing place, time and figure in blunt ambiguity he distills the complex information of the characters’ relationships and psychological state. In this exhibition he observes human behavior in its raw state, just as drawing first takes the form of an action without foundation, followed by thought later. In the moment of throwing and wiping paint, continuous impulsive action forms compelling motifs beneath the unconscious, forming a unique logic. He seeks a synchronicity living upon the surface and in this way each work produced is not to be defined merely as a portrait but captures the essence of painting.
