Japan is renowned for its historic traditions in ceramics, textile dying, lacquer ware, metal work, wood work, doll making and other crafts, which has continued to develop and gain further praise to this day. Within this lineage of tradition, those labelled “living national treasures” play a vital role in maintaining the survival and evolution of these forms. This exhibition places a focus on historic craft masterpieces, and important cultural properties, along with people who continue a reverence and challenge towards tradition, in the pursuit of a craft that lives within the day, connecting tradition and the contemporary age.
