As Tokyo gears up for the Olympics caught in the whirlpool of its never ending transformation, it is surprising to observe that the very districts of new initiatives such as Tokyo Sky Tree and the anime hub of Akihabara still reflect the traces of the former Edo era. Master of Ukiyo-e Hiroshige Utagawa captured the street scenes of the city of Edo in “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo 1850”, but as we compare these scenes with the urban landscapes of today we may still find districts which have been seemingly unchanged for 150 years. This exhibition welcomes the viewer into a time slip between the “two cities” of Edo and Tokyo.
