Jiyugaoka and the surrounding area of Meguro has long been a hub for creatives. It enjoyed particular heights as an artistic gathering place in the 1920’s-1930’s with the establishment of Kenzo Okada’s lively studio, which attracted local artists such as Takanori Ogisu, Kinosuke Ebihara, and Morisuke Komoda. Next came the inauguration of “Jiyugaoka School,” which promoted “Jiyu Kyoiku” (Free Education), and was further strengthened by Baku Ishii’s dance research center. Not only did painters and dancers gather here, but the area also drew many commercial and industrial designers such as Yoshio Akioka, Shogo Yamada, Tatsuzo Sasaki, and Reikichi Yura, as well as architects including Iwao Yamawaki. With a focus on the work of Kenzo Okada and his contemporaries, this exhibition celebrates the modern masters of this particular district.
