The kinetic art which emerged in Europe in the 20th century was defined by the very incorporation of movement into works of art. These included the employment of various mechanisms to instigate kinetic workings and light emission, as well as playing upon the very workings of our perception to produce the sense of motion. The origins of this movement may be traced to the Futurists who emerged at the beginning of the 20th century with a belief in the “beauty of speed”. Kinetic art itself came to full fruition in the late 1950s and 1960s, coming to form a new field of art. This exhibition examines the development of this art form in 1960s Italy, introducing the experiments of 30 artists, from the pioneering work of Bruno Munari to a wide variety of Italian, as well as French and German artists working at the time, gathered together in a collection of 90 works.
