Richard SERRA
Known for large-scale and site-specific projects using steel plates, Richard Serra is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in contemporary sculpture. At the age of 74, he is still rigorously engaged in the production of new works presented at exhibitions throughout the world. While performing sculptural experiments, in the early 1970s Serra began to work with drawing as a means of exploring the recognition of space and the relationship between one’s body and space. Using blocks of paint stick, he smears extremely large surfaces with a thick coat of black in pursuit of visual and physical effects that cannot be achieved by conventional ink or charcoal. The surface of the heavy black paint stick has been polished and emphasized to create tension, as if each piece has been given the gravity to dominate the site. The spatial qualities of Serra’s sculptures, such as long torqued surfaces and compositions of rectangular volumes, are well represented in his drawings. The major exhibition “Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective” was held in 2011–2012, touring three museums in the United States starting with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Since 1972, Serra has also produced a series of etchings. Diverse textures found in his drawings are reproduced in ink, making possible heavy expressions that would not have been imaginable in traditional prints. This exhibition presents selected recent prints, including large works more than two meters in height.
