Chen Ruo Bing
Chen Ruo Bing has participated in many solo and group shows at museums, galleries, and art fairs around the world. His works are in the collections of museums in Germany, China and South Korea. Since studying at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, Chen has painted repetitions of simple geometric forms on canvas, giving equal value to the image and the background. This approach is an experiment in uniting the traditions of Chinese painting natural to him with the European modernism of the country where he lives. With his shallow, decorative use of space and delicate blots of acrylic reminiscent of ink painting in China, his simple geometric forms and bright colors evoke a sense of joy. With metaphysical light radiating from within them, Chen’s paintings are attractive and highly unique. While he seems to have developed his own original painting style that transcends the framework of a confrontation between East and West after spending more than half of his life in Germany, Chen is consistent in his fundamental stance as a Chinese painter working in modern Europe.
Chen changed his way of working after moving to a larger studio around 2008. He now chooses directions he has taken in earlier works and concentrates on taking them to new places, in many cases in large formats. His first such experiment was the painting “Body of Light”, which evolved from earlier paintings with monolithic forms in their centers. Next he turned to paintings featuring circles representing the “Image of Time”. He is currently focusing on “The Trace of Origin”, paintings with disk forms. In these works, he investigates the relationship between their discs and backgrounds.
