Ko-imari ware with Animal Design

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
Popular as artistic motifs since ancient times in Japan, animals can be found on early-17th century Edo period Imari ware. These ceramics portray animals such as rabbits and birds, as well as foreign creatures including tigers and elephants, and auspicious, sacred beasts such as dragons and Chinese lion dogs. The same animals were illustrated in many different popular styles of the time— in their real forms, in simplified designs, and in symbolic illustrations. Besides appearing in illustrations, these animal motifs were also used as models for the shapes of plates, ornaments, and other sculptural arts during the latter half of the 17th century. This exhibition displays Imari ware with animal motifs, presented as if shown in an illustrated encyclopedia. The faces of the animals feature lovely and vivid expressions.
