Takashi Homma “Towards the City— Camera Obscura Study”

Takashi Honma’s photographs are studies in cities, weaving together places as far and varied as Tokyo, Hawaii, New York, and India. This exhibition presents ten of his works focusing on Tokyo and New York. Images of single corners and rooms in hotels and skyscrapers are, in Honma’s words, “attempts to capture cities through their own lenses.” Using methods of camera obscura— considered an early form of photography— he interweaves iconographic landmarks such as water towers with the cities’ numerals, typographies, and other design elements. This approach can be considered an intentional distancing from documentation, passivity, and other inherent aspects of photography.
