Tokuro Sakamoto
Art Front Gallery presents “Periphery,” Tokuro Sakamoto’s exhibition following his 2012 show “Long Distance View.” After majoring in Japanese painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, Sakamoto further developed his technique at the Nihonga Juku school of Japanese paintng and has continued to depict everyday scenes using mostly acrylic paint on Japanese hemp paper. At times he leaves large areas of the painting blank, such as in his drawings of the sky, mountains, roads, power lines, traffic lights, and parks and playground equipment. He has become well known for series that at first glance seem to simply cut objects away from their settings to create scenes that could be found anywhere. In this exhibit, he presents compositions depicting “backgrounds” hidden in the shadows of central subjects.
