Artist’s statement: I have moved a lot in the past nine years, staying at a ruin, an abandoned house, an old apartment, a flophouse, a bar, and the exhibition space of an art gallery. At each place, I collected water for my “scorched paintings.” I have “scorched” various kinds of water— leftover bathwater, spring water, river water, rainwater, seawater, and lake water. Water is transparent when painting, but turns to color when it touches fire, emitting the elements it contains to produce pictures. The scorched particles that emerge from the sea and eventually return there. My work is about the reunion of particles after long periods of time.
