Kishio Suga
Since the late 1960s Kishio Suga(1944-) has taken up the materials of wood and stone, continuing to investigate the relations between natural materials and their surroundings. Through temporary structures formed from natural resources and building materials, he became known as one of the leading figures of mono-ha, a movement which gave particular emphasis to the raw properties of physical substance. His work is characterized by a form of material dependency brought about through the interlinking of materials in a transitory condition of incompleteness, always responding to the specifics of time and place, reflecting an acute sensibility as an artist attempting to draw out a universal structure within an era of increasing complexity and change. In this exhibition a range of his outdoor installation work developed since the 1970s is captured in the only remaining photographic documentation, also accompanied by his “activations”(performances) and texts in a variety of film and documents which form a transient world from which to question the meaning of now.
