Masanori Ikeda
Since 2012, Masanori Ikeda has been taking portraits that condense the essence of the Tokyo neighborhood of Kanda. Now numbering more than 50, these portraits take as their subjects a variety of people including managers of long-established shops and young café owners. Ikeda believes that photography is not a relationship between someone who photographs and someone who is photographed, but rather a shared process of making something together. As such, he opens up lines of communication and talks with his subjects.
Some 20 new portraits are on display as part of the artist-in-residence program sponsored by Chiyoda Ward and 3331 Arts Chiyoda. With the aim of bringing more people who work in, live in, and love the area together, Ikeda has expanded the scope of his project from just Kanda to all of Chiyoda Ward. By photographing subjects in the places to which they have ties, he hopes his portraits will capture the relationships and stories of a community and its people. This exhibition will also be shown at Chiyoda Ward City Hall from May 18.
