H.P. France Window Gallery Marunouchi presents a solo show for Natsuki Takayama, winner of Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi’s 2014 H.P. France Award. Takayama’s paintings stand out for the bead and embroidery-like textures of their materials and their powerful brushstrokes. The compelling theme of the relationship between people and animals runs throughout her work, although the term “relationship” does not do the subject justice— something closer to “consciousness” is what can be felt in these paintings. The images of humans and animals intermingle in vapor-like forms, conjuring up intangibilities such as the flow of time and the vagueness of memory, yet Takagi succeeds in taking the essences of these creatures into the realm of the sublime.
