Yuto Kasai
Yuto Kasai’s work “Marginal Man is Dead,” employs photography as a cathartic means of tackling his own mental conflict and was awarded the grand prix in the 9th photography “1_Wall” competition, impressing judges with his clear concept and sophisticated finish exploiting photographic expression to the full.
In these images of hidden faces and traces of what had once been we recall the artist’s struggle against something concealed within. Far from being intimate the images are infused with a disconcerting violence, with the fragile male nude only inviting a sense of discomfort without being identified. Kasai claims “I want to capture absurdity of human existence” perhaps an indication of his attempt to save his past self through the medium of photography. Here in his first solo exhibition Kasai takes the opportunity to confront his surroundings and break through with the power of photography.
