The special exhibition “There’s Something Happening Here II: 1923, 1945, and Beyond” on the 4th and 3rd floor is a postwar edition of “There’s Something Happening Here.” It not only traces various developments in art after 1945 (following events such as the Great Kanto Earthquake, the Sino-Japanese War, and the Pacific War) through paintings and sculptures, but also focuses on the state of the nation as seen in magazines and films. The fact that memories of the war rapidly faded with the approach of the Tokyo Olympics (1964) leaves us with many profound questions. On the 2nd floor is a display of newly acquired works related to the Great East Japan Earthquake by Chim↑Pom, Fujii Hikaru Fujii, and Toshiya Murakoshi. The route leading from the 4th floor down to the 2nd floor offers various ideas about the repeated cycle of disaster and recovery that followed the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923), World War II (1945), and the Great East Japan Earthquake (2011).
