Taro Okamoto
“Inescapable reality” was the phrase Taro Okamoto used in “Essay on Jomon Earthenware: A Dialog with a Fourth Dimension” from 1952. In it, Okamoto considered how artists should address “inescapable realities” such as the atomic bombing, the Cold War, and economic crises. This exhibition introduces works born from Okamoto’s concerns about the realities faced by society, displaying his passionate photography of Jomon-period earthenware, “Construction”, his portrait of energy in the post-war rival period, and “Tower of the Sun”, a work that remains popular today.
