Toyo Ito
Focusing on architect Toyo Ito’s designs for the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House currently nearing completion, this exhibition features models, drawings, documentary footage, and a wall-section mockup showing how the project has developed since its selection as the winning proposal in a 2005 competition. In 2011, the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the 40th anniversary of his firm, Ito founded the NPO “Initiative for Tomorrow’s Opportunities in Architecture” and opened the architecture education center “Ito Juku.” He later launched the “Minna no Ie” (Everyone’s Home) project, working vigorously in post-disaster restoration efforts and a variety of activities that through architecture contribute to and raise questions about society. These experiences have led Ito to his current ongoing project, the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House, a new space carrying the high expectations of many.
