Hisao Ishizawa
Born in Takasaki in 1932 Hisao Ishizawa began to receive instruction on the principles of painting from Fusaichiro Inoue, with a particular focus upon the work of Cezanne. Being introduced through Inoue to the architect Antonin Raymond, in 1961 Ishizawa began his career in mural painting, working together with other young local artists upon a grand wall painting for the Gunma Music Center. From here he developed a practice across mural painting and oil painting, with recent work taking on a particularly impressive monumentality. In contrast to this bold scale he uses a technique of delicate brushwork which builds up layers of color, rather than mixing them on the palette, and appears to open up a poetic dialogue with nature. This exhibition features his renowned work “Embrace”(1981), alongside 34 examples of oil paintings produced between the 1940s-2000s, as well as ink painting, pen drawing and photographic documentation of the mural painting at Gunma Music Center.
