Hideya Kawakita
Hideya Kawakita believes that freely exercising our creativity and imaginations while working with our surroundings is a major component of human happiness. He has consistently incorporated this idea in his work, as well his view that “design as an activity coordinates all kinds of relationships.” In honor of Kawakita’s retirement, this exhibition looks back on some 30 years of his career from 1983 through the present. Among the items on display are the strawberry milk packages he created as a student at Tokyo University of the Arts, his map of the Tokyo Subway system, and his popular series of subway manners posters (1973–1982). Commercial designs, TV commercials, posters, ads, and publications focusing on his work for the iichiko shochu company are also presented.
