130 Years of Yumeji Takehisa

Nihombashi Takashimaya 8F Hall

Artists

Yumeji Takehisa, Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa
This year marks 130 years since the birth of leading figure of Taisho Romanticism Yumeji Takehisa(1884-1934), and provides an opportunity to reappraise the work and life of this poet and painter, who not only produced strikingly sensitive bijinga works but also worked widely across the publishing and advertising world. His approach to art and design may be compared to that of Parisian artist Toulouse-Lautrec(1864-1901), both working at forefront of the “Belle Epoque”. Here the correspondences between the two artists’ work are highlighted in a large scale exhibition providing a new overview of Takehisa’s legacy upon Japanese modern art.
