Yokohama Museum Of Art Collection Part 2

Yokohama Museum of Art
Finished
Abstract Painting – Postwar to Present. Light and Shadow – Dialogue with the City. This collection exhibition is brought together over 2 themes. The first being the abstract painting of postwar Japan up to the present day, reflecting on the development of this art form since the mid 20th century. The second theme takes its inspiration from the concurrent Whistler exhibition and settles upon the elements of “light and dark”, in particular as encountered in the urban landscape, with the replacement of natural light of the sun and moon with artificial light of lampposts and illuminations. Cities ravaged by war and natural disaster continue in their rebirth, with their energy and pathos eloquently articulated through the work of the artists featured in this exhibition who have taken on the light and dark of urban space.
