“The Dawn of Modern Medicine in Japan: From Dutch Medicine to German Medical Science”

This exhibition places on display the superb collection of medical specimens accumulated by the University of Tokyo since the founding of the Faculty of Medicine in 1878, which has survivednumerous disasters of the Great Kanto Earthquake, wartime bombings and student protests. Here one may find numerous materials used for education and research, including manmade models, medical instruments and laboratory equipment. In an age of increasing concern for medical ethics, the public exhibition of bodily specimens encounters growing difficulties and as a result the opportunity to present related historical documentation such as models and instruments has also become rare, leading historical research on medicine to a path of decline. The aim of this exhibition is to present in a reconstituted form the evolution of modern medical science in Japan, through the medical heritage dating from the end of the shogunate to the first half of the Meiji period and raise new interest in the scientific and cultural value of this work.
