Kiyokata Kaburaki(1878-1972) was born in Kanda, Tokyo in the early Meiji era and came to study painting under Yoshitoshi Tsukioka and Toshikata Mizuno. While making a living as an illustrator he came to build up his name as an artist enjoying success with a variety of nihonga exhibitions, but it was the utopian floating worlds of Edo ukiyo-e which were to become the focus of his passion. And while showing a devotion to the work of those such as Shunsho Katsukawa, Kiyonaga Torii and Harunobu Suzuki, sympathizing with a respect for the seasons and sense of place, he also came to find a footing in his original bijinga painting. His lifetime work was to be his intricate depictions of the Meji Tokyo of his childhood with landscapes of Edo and Meiji becoming completely obliterated later through war and in so doing instigating a further shift in Kaburaki’s style. This exhibition places a spotlight on his Edo visions of paradise presented alongside works from the museum collection produced during the Edo period itself.
