“Life and Prayer, Kannon Sculptures from Nagahama”

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
The area around the northern shores of Lake Biwa is famed for its rich array of Kannon sculptures which may be observed across various temples of the region, with fine examples from the Heian period being particularly prevalent in Nagahama city, Shiga prefecture, local people continuing to care for the statues even after the temples themselves have disappeared. This exhibition hosts 20 examples of the sculptures from the “Land of Kannon” and places them in context with the worship and prayers of local residents.
