In 2006, the current Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared his vision towards Japan as a ‘Beautiful Country’. But now, where have all the Japanese flowers gone? This exhibition questions the current state of the country and debates the possibilities of its future. Here 6 artists working across a range of mediums offer up their own enquiries into the current age.
Works include Genpei Akasegawa inspirations which reverses our sense of motion and stillness(Shusuke Ao), spotlights on the friction between Japanese and Western culture in the images of Japanese monsters summoned from the encounter with new foreign words (Ryota Shimamoto), the search for an open society through the act of undressing its people (Ryuta Tanii), the questioning of time and reality in the photograph through depictions of a character dressed in his father’s military uniform from the war(Nipporini), the daily dependence upon mobile technology examined through a series of cell phone portraits (Yuki Hashimoto) and irony filled performance which throws a challenge towards conventional rules and systems (Scoop Brancisco).
Over three categories of “Impossible Challenge”, “Unbending Mind”and “Heart of Japan” this exhibition makes an attempt to approach an alternative image of this country and to reexamine what it means to be “beautiful”.
