Etsuko Enami, who has spent the three years since the Great East Japan Earthquake photographing Tohoku, has seen variations within the region but the beginning of a gradual return to life. Across Tohoku, new businesses and shops are opening and citizens are moving from emergency housing into new homes. Step by step, people are moving forward with determination and hope. These photographs show their smiling faces.
