With the aid of funding from supporters of Tokyo University of the Arts a group of students from the Japanese Painting Lab and associated staff have undertaken research into the art of the sketch, that creative form which is usually intended as an understudy and most often than not kept out of view from the public. In the 9th year of this ongoing project participants continue to grasp after the unique charm and significance of the sketch, which while seemingly depicting the outer world with objectivity, also captures the artist’s subjective mind.
