The Rings from the Hashimoto Collection of the National Museum of Western Art

National Museum Of Western Art, Tokyo
Finished
This exhibition commemorates the donation of the Hashimoto Collection of more than 870 jewelry items, primarily rings, to the NMWA in 2012. This exhibition is the first public display of works from this collection, featuring a select range of 300 rings from amongst the 760 collected by Kanshi Hashimoto (b. 1924) across an extremely broad spectrum of eras and regions. From a 4000 year old ancient Egyptian scarab ring to Bugari’s production of a ring from and ancient Roman coin this exhibition brings new apperception not merely to the aesthetics of jewelry but also of the culture of their makers. Here jewelry items are also accompanied by costumes from the Kobe Fashion Museum dating from the 18th century to first half of the 20th century, from the courtly fashions of the Rococo period, as personified by Marie Antoinette, to the early 20th century styles designed by Coco Chanel, allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of these rings in context with their corresponding fashions.
