Hideaki Kawashima
Having turned away from his self-identifying portraits of his early career, and taking a step towards the portraiture of the other, Hideaki Kawashima here undertakes a new step in his artistic practice, reflecting a freedom and strength of spirit likely to have been inspired by his training as a Buddhist monk. His paintings are characterized by the subject’s floating face a plain background, with long trailing hair that seems to express something of the unearthly allowing us to imagine more a human soul than a human being. In his latest work his subjects are untied from their typical colours, their outlines are liberally deformed, and they seem to embody the very notion of ‘creating a picture’.
