Artists

Yuichi Higashionna
Yuichi Higashionna is an artist who works with everyday materials, taking interiors as the motif of many of his paintings, objects and installations. In his ongoing “Chandelier” series, first imitated in 2001, Higashionna makes use of fluorescent tubes, particularly referencing the circular lighting tubes which became so popular in post war Japan as a symbol of a particular mentality/sentiment of Japan/Japanese people and reflecting the artist’s own ambivalence towards the lighting culture of Japan. In his work Higashionna plays upon the line between interior and exterior and in so doing reveals the bounds of our own awareness or the environment which forms that awareness. This exhibition features the chandelier series along with paintings, moving image work and new recent productions.
