The Birth of Impressionism - Freedom in Painting: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay

The National Art Center, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir et al.
This summer 84 masterpieces arrive in Japan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, famed for its superb collection of impressionist art. Under the theme of “The Birth of Impressionism”, this show looks back 140 years to when the first impressionist exhibition was held in 1874 — with the shock of this innovative style provoking a scandal in the Paris art community, and here set to bring a revival to Tokyo through a selection of work from the likes of Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas and Cézanne, also accompanied by art of the same era ranging from realist paintings by Corot, Millet and Courbet to academic paintings by Cabanel and Bouguereau.
