Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984), a Living National Treasure in the the art of kataezome textile stencil dyeing, was drawn to the Folk Craft Movement after meeting Soetsu Yanagi. He became famous for developing his own kataezome method based on Okinawan bingata stencil dyeing. A survey of his diverse creativity reveals that he was not only a dyeing artist, but also an outstanding designer— a magician of color and form. This two-part exhibition celebrating the 120th anniversary of Serizawa’s birth explores the aesthetic and feeling of his work with a look at his wide range of designs and his collection of arts and crafts from around the world.
