Kyotaro Hakamata

Kyotaro Hakamata has emerged as one of the most-watched sculptors of his generation. Starting out as an artist in the late 1980s, his works have a fresh style that turns the concept of sculpture on its head. This uniqueness is not limited to style, however. His surprising, unconventional works are made from plywood, plastics, electric cords, and other materials, forming dynamic and sometimes humorous puzzles. Bewildering us with their appearances, Hakamata asserts that the key to making his works interesting is continually asking himself “What is sculpture?” To him, the answer lies in a belief that “sculpture is created from an antagonism between the surface and the invisible interior.” This philosophy becomes the standard of his art, leading him to find new forms of expression while getting at the heart of what sculpture is.

In recent years Hakamata’s sculptures have taken figurate forms composed of overlapping, brightly multicolored acrylic panels. At first glance these colorful works strike the viewer as pop art, while still fitting with Hakamata’s ideas about sculpture and its dual properties of visibility and invisibility, fiction and reality. This exhibition introduces works from throughout Hakamata’s career, including recent and new works, demonstrating his unique approach.
